STUDENT RESOURCES

The Midnight Golf Program is actively supporting our 256 college-bound Detroit-area high school seniors who were enrolled in our 30-week life skills training and mentorship program. Additionally, we are actively supporting over 1,800 currently enrolled college students and early career professionals and are continuing to provide them with the resources they need to thrive during this challenging time.

The COVID-19 crisis makes our work more important than ever. The pandemic created a unique crisis and makes evident the equity issues faced by people with fewer options.

We are doing everything in our power to help our students navigate this situation, ensuring this crisis will not be a force that holds them back from achieving their long term goals. As our students are learning to cope with a new set of challenges, we are helping them learn how to adjust to unexpected change and adversity.

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in compliance with the governor’s orders, the Midnight Golf Program made a number of changes to our programming:

  • All in-person life-skills sessions are being conducted virtually using the Zoom platform.
  • Our Road Trip for Success college tour was cancelled; a virtual college fair is in the planning stages.
  • We cancelled our significant public events including:
    • The Bowl-A-Thon
    • The Pinning Ceremony
    • All group gatherings.

The Midnight Golf Program is continuing to:

  • Prepare students for college by providing critical life skills instruction, facilitated virtually through Zoom by business, education, and human service professionals; and keeping students informed with up-to-date information and resources from the college access and university communities.
  • Assist students in their college selection and application process through virtual one-on-one coaching sessions facilitated by MGP’s College Success Coaches. The college success team is hard at work helping students and their families navigate the new financial aid and admissions landscape impacting universities across the country.
  • Provide opportunities for team-building with our current class through virtual mentor-led small group “tee time” sessions via Zoom; continued mentor check-ins via video conferencing and group chats; and a number of interactive social media engagement opportunities kicked off with “MGP Spirit Week” activities.
  • Stay in touch with our college students to advise them on how to navigate their “new normal.” From providing displaced students with transportation and housing assistance and other student support, to connecting them with professional development, internship and employment opportunities; MGP continues to be a resource for our program alumni.

With high schools, colleges and universities closed state-wide, students are challenged by disrupted learning environments and the support system they need to thrive academically and in their day-to-day lives. For many of our students, MGP is their source for direct support. This comprehensive support system provides:

  • MGP remains committed to the success of our 1,800+ college and 256 high school students from our Class of 2020, most of whom are college-bound this fall. Our College Success Coaches have been instrumental in ensuring the safe return home for all of our young people who had to abruptly evacuate campus and are continuing to have one-on-one calls and virtual meetings with our high school students as scheduled.
  • Our mentors are continuing to reach out to our students, providing another source of support and encouragement.
  • We are communicating with our students frequently via email and updating them on the changing landscape of college admissions for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • $205,300 in 2020 Midnight Golf-exclusive Scholarship Funds have been dispersed.
  • Students received virtual lessons that are commensurate with our existing agenda and beyond. Some of the content has been developed by Midnight Golf and some gathered from a number of excellent resources.
  • Despite the cancellation of the Road Trip for Success, students received their golf clubs and clothing. During the Road Trip week, we engaged with our students through a virtual spirit week that took place across social media using the hashtag #MGPtogether.
  • Coaches and Mentors have increased the frequency of check-ins with our college students – fielding requests for support and offering guidance during this period of adjustment.
  • This summer we received approximately 20 requests from Class of 2020 students for laptops to aid in their virtual learning. 100% of these requests will be fulfilled by the fall.
  • MGP continues to serve as a resource to the young people we serve, connecting them with assistance provided at the federal, state, and local level via our website at midnightgolf.org/covid19response.

In partnership with our funders, we are re-appropriating funds in the following ways:

  • Funds previously committed to the Road Trip for Success have been allocated for resources that ensure our young people remain on their journeys to college and career success. This includes but is not limited to assistance with college applications enrollment fees, housing deposits, seat deposits, transportation to and from campus, and other back-to-school expenses.
  • MGP is fielding an increased number of student support funding requests. For the first time in our program’s history, college support requests have exceeded $100,000 and we anticipate that need to grow even higher in the weeks to come.
  • MGP is investing in and utilizing technology to facilitate virtual information sessions for Midnight Golf and our partner institutions.

We have expanded our partnerships, including identifying new university partners and securing increased funding for MGP students from new and existing partners.

Thank you to all of our loyal donors, supporters and volunteers who are stepping up to ensure our students’ success!

These are challenging times for us all, and we hope you’re in good spirits and health! Please consider making a donation today to help us continue to support our young people.
