MGP Alumna Competes on a National Scale

Erin Martin (MGP ’17) knows good things happen when she listens to her mentors. When MGP Success Coach, Winston Coffee, and mentor, Demetrius Scott, sent her information about Moguls in the Making, a Detroit-based entrepreneurial competition for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) students, Erin didn’t hesitate to apply.

This March, Erin found herself on a plane to her hometown of Detroit with four other classmates from Alabama A&M. For the next three days, she would compete in a ‘Shark Tank’-like competition hosted by Hip Hop Artist and Detroit native, Big Sean, Ally Financial and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund against 9 other teams.

Teams developed a business plan and presented it to the judges at the end of the long weekend. They also received mentorship and educational sessions on business, finance and entrepreneurship.

For Erin, a marketing major and entrepreneurship minor, this was the perfect opportunity to network with potential employers, meet other HBCU students and enjoy time in her hometown. Erin’s team developed a business plan for an app to help people struggling with mental health.

“It was amazing. It opened so many doors for me,” Erin said. “I’m still kind of on a cloud right now.”

As a result of her Moguls in the Making experience, Erin has been offered a digital strategy summer internship at Ally Financial. She will work out of their Charlotte, NC office.

Her advice for current and future MGP students: “To soak up all the knowledge that your mentors give you. Sometimes I’m going through something, and I look back and it helps me get through. The things that your mentors instill in you really pay off when you need them.”

Erin counts her blessings everyday. “Glory be to God. I couldn’t have gotten this far without God,” she says.
